Ex-Arsenal boss Unai Emery leads Villarreal to Europa League glory

Former Arsenal manager Unai Emery has led Villarreal to their first major European trophy with an 11-10 penalty shoot out win over Manchester United in the Europa League final.

The match went to penalties with the score still goalless and it was a Spanish goalkeeper called Geronimo Rulli who was the hero as he saved David de Gea's effort to win the cup.

After the game, Emery spoke about his time at Arsenal and how he felt about winning the Europa League with Villarreal. "I am very happy for the club, for the players, and for the fans," Emery said. "We have worked very hard for this moment and we deserve it. I am also very happy for myself. I have always said that I believe in my ability and I am always confident in my work. I am happy that I have been able to prove myself again."

Here are some additional highlights from the match:

  • Bukayo Saka missed the decisive penalty for Arsenal, sending his effort wide of the goal.
  • This was Arsenal's second Europa League final defeat in three years, having also lost to Chelsea in 2019.
  • Villarreal won their first major European trophy and their first trophy since 2006 when they won the Copa del Rey.
  • Unai Emery has now won the Europa League four times, more than any other manager.
